The Momnibus: Data to Save Moms Act

Introduced by Representative Sharice Davis and Senator Tina Smith

Background

Accurate, relevant data is critical to improving maternal health outcomes through effective interventions. Unfortunately, serious shortcomings in data collection and reporting making it more difficult than it should be to identify and address the factors driving our maternal mortality crisis.¹

To improve maternal health data collection and research, the Data to Save Moms Act makes critical investments that will advance evidence-based solutions to the United States maternal health crisis. One provision of the legislation – funding for maternal health research at Minority-Serving Institutions – was enacted through the Fiscal Year 2023 government spending package. By passing the comprehensive Data to Save Moms Act, we will be able to identify and fund interventions to save moms’ lives and end maternal health disparities.

Awards

Starting in Fiscal Year 2023, through Rep. Underwood's role on the Appropriations Committee, the BMHC has secured funding in the annual federal funding package based on the Data to Save Moms Act. This funding has been used by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration to establish the first-ever federally funded research network to study maternal health disparities at HBCUs and MSIs across America:
